Beautiful things

Some people are able to let go of beautiful things easily, I am not one of those people. Can you believe that this was found on a hard rubbish pile, I seem drawn to the abandoned and unwanted.

My space

Things I don't do enough of:
  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Making images
  • Doing nothing at all
  • Being creative
Things I really enjoy doing:
  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Making images
  • Doing nothing at all
  • Being creative
Hmmm, I think there could be a pattern in there somewhere. Yesterday I started work on my studio/darkroom to try and and rectify some of the above. I have a 3m x 4m external room that the previous owner built as an extra bedroom, which I have been using as storage space. Plans include large lightbox/table, small wet area for film processing and small enlargements, large pinboard/ideas board, bookcase, beanbag and stereo. It has one large window with a brilliant view, so I will be using some sort of velcro blackout material rather than sealing the window.

This is what I really love to do, just walk around with a camera.

I guess it's street photography, but I like to call it my "Seinfeld Photos", stay with me now as I explain. Jerry Seinfeld is an 'observational' comedian an uses everyday stuff in a "have you ever noticed" kind of way, bringing attention to the funny and amusing in the everyday that people miss.

These are some of my "Have you ever noticed" photos.

Photographic Style?

I hear a lot of people say that most photographers will develop a style over time. I have looked at all my work, and I'm stuffed if I can find one. Does someone really need a "style"? What is a "style"?

Is not having a style a style?

A couple from my non-style, the first is called "Blue" funny enough.

This was a real "American Beauty" moment, I was waiting to cross the road when this bit of paper started hovering right in front of me, by the time I got the shot off it had touched down again, but i still love the shot for some reason.

These believe it or not are from a wedding. I would really like to do more of this sort of candid work, but finding a good location, not getting punched or sued makes it kind of hard. It was not until looking at them later I realised they reminded me of some early Bill Henson work, 'crowd' I think they were called.
